Seed Success Stories and Comments

Entomologist and Dung Beetle specialist Prof. Clarke Scholtz has been restoring vegetation during vacations on a degraded farm near Calvinia. He wrote “We had a fantastic start to the season with between 8-18 mm of rain, weekly for 6 weeks (until early July), then nothing since. We have worked out a planting strategy that works well for us – I walk with a hoe and dig cup-size holes and Jenny follows, drops in some seed then kicks the soil back in. When the soil is soft we cover big areas quickly – open areas get grass seed (Ehrharta calycina and Chaetobromus involucratus), and we sow Tetragonia (klappiesbrak) and Tripterus sinuata (karoo bietou) around bushes. The grass and Tripterus germinated well but we’re not sure whether there are any signs of Tetragonia yet.”

“The one spectacular success we have had was to stop sheet erosion at the foot of a koppie – we laid Prosopis branches [before the summer rains] at 10m intervals across the flow on one side of a donga. The braches not only stopped the erosion but slowed the water flow which dispersed seed across the whole area and collected masses of seed - the layers of branches are now hedges! The area across the donga that we haven’t got to yet has remained barren, so we have a perfect “treatment” and “control”!! “
